Gypsy Jazz (also known as jazz manouche or gypsy swing) is an acoustic style of jazz that originated in Paris in the 1930s, pioneered by Romani guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli through their ensemble, the Quintette du Hot Club de France. This genre blends American swing, French musette, and Romani musical traditions, featuring virtuosic improvisation and a distinctive rhythmic strumming pattern called la pompe on acoustic guitars. Typical instrumentation includes lead and rhythm guitars, violin, and upright bass, without drums. Gypsy jazz is characterized by its buoyant swing, chromatic harmonies, and emphasis on string instruments, and it remains influential in both jazz and world music scenes.
